What is an ignition coil?

An ignition coil is a component in a vehicle's ignition system that is responsible for converting low voltage battery power into high voltage power needed to create a spark in the spark plugs. It is a type of transformer that boosts the battery's voltage to the level required for ignition.
 

How does the ignition coil work in the engine?

• The ignition coil receives low voltage electricity (typically 12 volts) from the battery.
• The low voltage electricity flows through the primary winding of the ignition coil, creating a magnetic field.
• When the engine's control unit triggers the ignition system, it interrupts the flow of electricity through the primary winding.
• This abrupt interruption of current causes the magnetic field in the ignition coil to collapse rapidly.
• The collapsing magnetic field induces a high voltage current (around 20,000 to 30,000 volts) in the secondary winding of the ignition coil.
• The high voltage electricity is then sent to the spark plugs through the distributor or ignition module.
• The spark plugs use the high voltage electricity to create a spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the engine's cylinders, starting the combustion process and powering the engine.
